Dayton Dunbar repeats as the Division II State Champion by beating Upper Sandusky at the Value City Arena.
Dunbar jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, by converting many transition baskets, the score was Dunbar up by eight (26-18). The Wolverines were on fire early, but Ohio State recruit Jon Diebler and the Upper Sandusky Rams got on track. At the half it was Dunbar up (45-39), as the Wolverines shot 54 percent from the field; the Rams had problems shooting the ball all evening only converting 6-23 three-pointers in the first half. Upper Sandusky was able to keep it close because Dunbar was unable to stop the turnovers (18) in the first half. Dunbar’s Aaron Pogue got into early foul trouble, two in the first quarter and one early in the third, and sat most of the first half.
Aaron is a great player, and I think he deserved more than a honorable mention on the All-Ohio team. He is our MVP, and it showed in the second half today.” - Peter Pullen, Dunbar Coach
It was a very physical game, hard fouls, elbows and several official timeouts for blood removal from several players throughout the contest. Jon Diebler returned after the half wearing a face-mask from an earlier injury to his nose in the Regional final. The mask didn’t stay on long as Mr. Ohio Basketball caught fire in the third and fourth quarters finishing the contest with 48 points. Dayton Dunbar had a balanced attack with three players in double figures, and also won the battle on the boards (63-23).
