Week 2: Grove City vs Buford Ga.

Staff on Aug 30th 2007

The Grove City Greyhounds will square-off against the Buford, Georgia Wolves in the 2007 Herbstreit Challenge III Saturday, September 1st at the Canton Hall of Fame stadium. This will be the first game of four, and will kick-off at 11:30 a.m..

Grove City coming off a very tough loss last week to Worthington Kilbourne will face the preseason Georgia Class AA #1 team. Buford has a great tradition, and a great football history winning last year’s Region 6-AA Championship, the Wolves finished the season 12-1.

Loaded with several D1 prospects, with two outstanding defensive players ILB T.J. Pridemore (Georgia Tech) and DT Omar Hunter (Notre Dame), the Wolves will have the upper-hand on the defensive side of the ball.

Grove City has their own star in QB Elijah Smurthwaite who completed 23 of 40 passes for 305 yards for the Greyhounds in a losing cause last week. The Dawgs have the skill players to play with anyone in the nation and definitely won’t back down from the Wolves.

Grove City has a reputation as the spoiler in the Ohio Capital Conference, Buckeye division. Last year’s record (4-6) is no indication of how hard the Greyhounds competed; playing Dublin Coffman and eventual Division I champion Hilliard Davidson last season. The Buckeye division could yield yet another Division I state title in Dublin Coffman, so the quality of Opponents Grove City has faced will allow them to compete on both sides of the ball against anyone.

Other games being played at the Canton location:

Game Two: (2:15 p.m.) Glenville vs. Long Beach (Ca.) Poly- Poly is nationally ranked in many preseason polls. Glenville knocked off Indianapolis Warren Central last week 38-36.

Game Three: (5:00 p.m.) Youngstown Cardinal Mooney vs. Gateway (Pa.) Youngstown Cardinal Mooney is loaded with 6-7 division I college prospects.

Game Four: (7:45 p.m.) Canton McKinley vs. Tulsa (Ok.) Union in the night cap, McKinley will defend its home turf like a rabid dog.

If you aren’t doing nothing Saturday, come join the crew of Ohio Prep Stars, and watch some of the best teams in the country!
